Empowerment of Deaf Women 2

Program “Memperkuasakan Wanita Pekak” yang kedua bagi Malaysia Utara diadakan di Batu Ferringhi, Pulau Pinang selama 3 hari. Program tersebut dianjurkan dengan kerjasama PMY Pulau Pinang. Seramai 21 orang dari Pulau Pinang, Perak dan Kuala Lumpur menyertai program ini. Kakitangan dari Women Development Collective (WDC) dan pemimpin wanita Pekak memberi ceramah tentang isu wanita. Mereka telah mendapat pengetahuan yang berfaedah dan menerokai diri sendiri. Selain itu, mereka juga dapat mempelajari cara-cara melindung diri dan memahami ciri-ciri kes rogol dan gangguan seks. Mereka menanamkan keazaman mereka untuk bertekad dan membantu gadis dan wanita Pekak yang lain.

Perayaan Hari Orang Pekak Antarabangsa 2004
International Deaf Day Celebration 2004
Hari Orang Pekak Antarabangsa biasanya diraikan pada hari Ahad yang akhir pada bulan September setiap tahun. Perayaan Hari Orang Pekak Antarabangsa itu dilangsungkan di YMCA KL pada 2 & 3 Oktober 2004 bersamaan hari istimewa iaitu Hari Terbuka YMCA KL. Bermacam-macam aktiviti yang menarik turut diadakan termasuk persembahan, pertunjukan kelab-kelab, seminar, permainan, karnival, jualan dan lain-lain. Buku bahasa isyarat yang terbaru berjudul “S.I.G.N.S. for CHILDREN” telah diterbitkan dan dirasmikan oleh En. N.M. Pillai, Pengarah JKMWP mewakili YB Dato’ G Palanivel. Ia dijual dengan harga RM20.00 sebuah. Selain ini, dua buah seminar bertajuk “Understanding Your Rights as Deaf Person” dan “Geran Bantuan untuk Menubuhkan Perniagaan” terbuka kepada masyarakat Pekak turut diadakan pada hari yang kedua. Seramai 96 orang Pekak menghadiri kedua-dua seminar tersebut. Ramai para hadirin tidak terkira bangsa, jantina dan pekak atau bukan pekak turut menghadiri program tersebut untuk meraikan perayaan Hari Orang Pekak Antarabangsa 2004.
THE INTERNATIONAL AWARD "Asia Pacific Regional Training Workshop"

The Asia Pacific Regional Training Workshop was held at the International Youth Centre, Kuala Lumpur from 4~8 October 2004. The training workshop was launched by HRH Prince Edward. Total of 151 participants from various countries participated this workshop. Our staffs, Ms. Jessica Mak and En. Anuar Ahmad participated in the workshop to gain their organising skills in Anugerah Remaja Perdana Rakan Muda Award. This is one programme that recognises the involvement of young people in the age group 15~25 years for their personal achievements and learning about themselves. The purpose of this Award programme is to develop youths who are responsible, disciplined and visionary. Kuala Lumpur YMCA has just recently been recognised as one ot the operating bodies of Anugerah Remaja Perdana Rakan Muda programme by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia. Current 15 Deaf youths have signed up for the Bronze, Silver and Gold.

PROGRAM KEM ICT UNTUK REMAJA PEKAK
ICT CAMP PROGRAMME FOR DEAF TEENS

6 December 2004
On the first day, the camp introduced the names and various compartments of computer. and the participants were taught the signs of each compartments of the computers. Then, the participants were divided into two groups, Group A and Group B. Kevin Mak and me were in-charge of the Group A for the first session. We taught the younger participants Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. The children were having more difficulty in M.Excel. It must be the difficulty in understanding the purpose of Microsoft Excel.

After lunch, we taught the Group B. The same topic: Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Group B is easier to teach as they understand the purpose of this topic very well compare to the younger participants. We also taught them how to burn their works into blank CD. So, they can keep their works for future use. Anne Laura also taught them how to use Internet to find useful information.

7 December 2004
On the second day, we taught the participants Microsoft Power Point. After that, the participants were showed some signs on different words related to IT and Technology. The participants learnt new signs and are happy to learn it. For them, it will be useful in future.

8 December 2004
On the third day, Anne Laura taught the participants how to use Adobe Photoshop to create better pictures and pamphlets. Participants are taught how to modify pictures to make it more interesting and fun to see.

And then, we had educational program with the participants. Anne Laura used Education CD-Rom to communicate with the participants. They all are having fun times using all the materials. And then, they had a rehearsal for our act presentation on the last day. There were 3 groups were going to act which were the group A, B and the facilitators.

9 December 2004
On the fourth day, we make the participants do some works related to IT and Technology. The younger participants were asked to use recycle materials to do some art works related to IT and Technology. And the older participants were asked to do power presentation with the topic “ Why I Like Technology?”

And then, after lunch, the participants presented their presentation and our act presentation. Then, there were presentation ceremony for the winners and appreciation certificates were given to the participants.

In this camp, the volunteers did their best to help the Anne Laura and the participants. And it was a success. I hope the participants can use their skills they learnt in this camp. All the best to them.
