THE NEW REACHING OUT AND RESTORE

Reviving YMCA KL’s  R.O.A.R Programme For A Greater Community Impact

R.O.A.R. or Reach Out & Restore is a YMCA KL Community Development Programme initiated three years ago with focus on Learning. It was originally known to provide positive impact for our beneficiaries at Batang Berjuntai ( now known as Bestari Jaya) being the underprivileged children from different schools around the estate and plantation areas. Our contributions including a distribution of Back-To-School Kits such as school bags, water bottles, colouring pencils, stationary, drawing blocks, files and exercise books had provided to the basic educational needs of the children in the area.

It has now evolved with strategized plans to encompass vast areas of Social Reform therefore, this year onwards the R.O.A.R. Programme will be delving deep and working with other Non-Profits / NGOs in the areas of Homelessness and Rehabilitation.

For the year 2017 we at YMCA KL will be expanding our reach towards a larger network of social reform within the Klang Valley communities through R.O.A.R. by shifting our core focus to areas within the Kuala Lumpur City area. The YMCA KL’s R.O.A.R. Programme has diligently identified and initiated mutual partnerships with various grassroots organisations that specialise in a particular area of Community Service and Social Community Reform. These Non-Government Organizations and Non-Profit Organisations focus their core social work in restoring hope for the homeless, urban poor, destitute, underprivileged by providing job opportunities, to those who help provide food, clothing and basic medical care.

With this focus we will be able to not only contribute time, money and manpower to support the city-wide effort in creating a greater difference, but also educate ourselves as Staff and Volunteer Teams in the process while learning from ground teams of other NGOs and NPOs with greater experience. Our goal is to create a successful and sustainable blueprint or future model of Community Development Programmes at the YMCA KL to impact the local Brickfields and Klang Valley community.

Previous contributions to R.O.A.R will be utilised here to assist organisations involved with helping the underprivileged and needy.

R.O.A.R x VIVASTARFISH

The VIVA STARFISH (Sdn. Bhd.) Project tackles the social loophole in the issues of both joblessness and homelessness by providing a step-by-step sustainable journey for the individual to return back into society. Their goal is to help empower and provide opportunities for the individual to journey out from the cycle of homelessness into a wholesome and sustainable life, by first allocating jobs and shelter. Street recruitments have been and are still conducted in areas such as central KL, Chow Kit, Kota Raya, Petaling Street, Medan Tunku, Pusat Gelandangan Bulatan Pahang and other targeted areas twice monthly to help the homeless community, urban poor, destitute and underprivileged family with jobs.

After the recruitment process, each candidate will go for medical examinations and followed by a job placement, motivation talk, financial literacy program and counselling. The job placements come with accommodation and an early allowance scheme to help them reintegrate into a working environment soonest. The integration into working environment is equipped with various training and counselling programs to build self-confidence and provide them the best chance of coming out of the cycle of poverty.

Volunteers for the YMCA KL Reaching Out and Restore (R.O.A.R) Programme and Staff of YMCA KL has and will continue participating in their immersion with VIVA STARFISH by joining in the Walkabout in identifying the needy that makes the streets of Kuala Lumpur their home. For the YMCA KL Volunteers participating, interviewing has been challenging as much as it was inspiring. Having the patience to understand and communicate with the homeless individuals was also no easy task but they managed to interview 15 potential candidates from the streets with the hope of change and empowerment.

We hope to continue our mutual connection with the VIVA STARFISH Project by gathering committed, mindful and innovative YMCA KL Volunteers into a Core R.O.A.R Volunteer Team that aspires to initiate and lead a greater partnership with them and strengthen the mutual effort of YMCA KL and KENOSIS Homes to rehabilitate and reform the lives of our homeless many in the Klang Valley.

KENOSIS HOMES

Organization Type             : Non-Profit Organisation & Social Enterprise

Date of Project                   : December 2016 – December 2017

Participation                       : Monetary Contribution and Volunteer Provision

Objective                             : Volunteer & Staff Immersion

R.O.A.R. X KENOSIS HOME

The Kenosis Homes specialises in Drug Rehabilitation for both Men and Women. Our initial support was for a home called ‘Morning Glory’ through providing them funds to purchase basic necessities for the home. They have around 40 inhabitants and 17 staffs who rely on donations and funding from their own works. This home and others under their banner feed the people seeking rehabilitation and provide counselling. Once the person is rehabilitated, they get them back on their feet by arranging job placements to allow them to earn a living. Our first step with the KENOSIS Homes was to understand their work flow and the reach of their community effort. There will soon be continuous discussions with KENOSIS Homes on how our Core R.O.A.R. Volunteer Team could work closely and mindfully while engaging directly with the rehabilitation progress of each individual.

We hope to continue our mutual connection with the KENOSIS Homes by gathering committed and resourceful YMCA KL Volunteers into a Core R.O.A.R Volunteer Team that aims to initiate and unfold a deeper partnership with them and amplify the collective effort of YMCA KL and KENOSIS Homes to rehabilitate drug addicts in the Klang Valley.
