YMCA SCC LION DANCE
YMCA SCC TAI-CHI 18 STEPS

The SCC started the first all-women's Lion Dance Troupe and it was officially inaugurated on 5 February 1993. In the same year, it performed at a dinner party held in the Chinese Assembly Hall to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The performance was well received by the members. Thereafter, the SCC Lion Dance has performed at every Chinese New Year function to received VIPs and to usher in the new year.

Mr. Chan Yim, as co-ordinator of the Troupe, was responsible for the Troupe's performance at the opening ceremony to celebrate the YMCA's 95th Anniversary in 2000. The average age of the Troupe is nothing less than 65 years, and despite their age, they are able to draw cheers from the crowd.

The "Tai-chi 18 Steps" is a unique form of exercise. Not only is it different from the ordinary physical exercise, it is also comparable to the Kung-Fu of mainland China. The movements of the Tai -Chi 18 steps are gentle and controlled. The breathing follows the movements of the body.

The exercise takes place as the first activity in the morning during club meetings days. Tai-Chi 18 steps helps one to stay healthy and agile. Mdm Ter Ah Geok who leads the class is in the pink of health, and you will never guess her age! Come and exercise to drive those aches and pains away and be rejuvenated.
YMCA SCC HARMONICA BAND
In January 1987, a group of pioneers organised the SCC Harmonica Group for the love of music and recreation. They included Mr. Choong Meng Kwai, Mdm Choong Geok Mow, Mdm Koh Lai Ying, Mr. Soo Kim Fook, Mdm. Yap Chee Tai, Mr. Tan Hock Seng, Mdm Leow Fui Sin and the late Mr. Khor Eng Huat.

As time went by, membership of the group increased and, in order to progress further, they decided to find an instructor to train the group. In June 1988, Mr. Chong Ching Chee volunteered to help out. He reorganised the group and introduced various types of harmonicas such as the Chord, the Bass, the Chromonica (Chromatic), the Diatonic, etc. to meet the requirements of the group.

The group then came up with their own uniform, i.e. red silk bows for the ladies, and red silk neck scarves for men, with long-sleeved white shirts and black trousers. A badge bearing the SCC logo also made up part of the uniform.

During the autumn of 1989, Mr. Chong Ching Chee went to Trossingen, Germany, to participate in the World Harmonica Competition.
A small delegation from the SCC Harmonica Group accompanied him for moral support. Mr. Chong was acclaimed the champion in the Diatonic Section.

Under this world-renowned harmonica player as instructor, standard of harmonica music of the group continued to improve. They were encouraged to take part in seminars, nation-wide competitions and training sessions to develop the capability and confidence of their members. One of the members, Mr. Ho Pooi was adjudged the champion in the Malaysian National Harmonica Competition held on 26 December 1994.

The training and exposure helped to prepare the group for the many performances to come. A significant occasion was their performance for the 1st Senior Citizens' Week which was inaugurated on October 1992, organised by the National Unity & Social Development Ministry at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

Today the SCC Harmonica Band boasts of a membership of at least 40 members. They meet twice a week to play at the YMCA. The band has always been supportive of promoting harmonica events at home and abroad.
