YMCA KL’s PMY Deaf Work and Future Plans

Discover why Pusat Majudiri ‘Y’ For the Deaf is one of the leading Deaf community advocates in Kuala Lumpur and how you can help us expand on efforts for this community.

Pusat Majudiri Y-Self Reliance centre for the Deaf under YMCA KL was set up in 1983.

Pusat Majudiri ‘Y’ for the Deaf (PMY) objectives are:-

·         Increase public awareness of the Deaf and its impact on society.

·         Promote early education, bilingual education and training opportunities for the Deaf.

·         Increase the participation of the Deaf community in society towards their integration into all spheres of life of community.

Since 1973, YMCA Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM), formerly known as Sign Language has been an aspiration to the public and a bridge between the Hearing community and the Deaf community. With amazing growth in popularity individuals from all walks of life and of all ages are discovering the study of BIM that gives rewarding and fascinating adventure when journeying through Level 1 to Level 3.

The course also provides an insight about Deaf people and their culture. Our target is to increase the current 5 classes to about 10-15 classes weekly by the year 2026.  Hence, more space is needed for this expansion.

PMY have DeafBeat, a fully Deaf percussionist team that perform Chinese drums since 2007. They perform locally and internationally for branded products, launching of events, for concerts and inclusive arts. To facilitate better performance and training, a well-equipped venue is required to elevate their capabilities to greater heights.
